Should You Pay Out of Pocket for an At-Fault Claim?

You have auto insurance to help you pay for accidents or injuries. In some situations, you may think twice about events that happen that may warrant a claim. Should you file a claim?

In some situations, filing an at-fault claim isn’t the best option. Of course, you should always inform your car insurance agent about any incidents. Yet, before you file a claim, remember these things.

Is the Claim More Than the Deductible?

If you’ve done damage to your vehicle, and you wish to file a claim, consider your deductible first. This is the amount of money you must pay first before your auto insurance company will pay you.

If the deductible is high, or a significant amount of the claim amount, it may not be worthwhile to file it. For example, your car insurance may cover the broken window on your vehicle. However, if your deductible is $500 and the window costs $250 to repair, you would not see any payment to you.

What’s the Risk of Filing a Claim?

Again, you should always inform your insurance agent about any auto incidents. However, filing an at-fault claim can put your auto insurance policy at risk.

Your agent may not renew it at your renewal date. In other cases, your rates may go up. This happens because the insurance agency bases premium costs on risk. As a driver with one or more at-fault incidents, you are a higher risk to the agency. That results in higher fees.

However, if you have an accident with another person or property, contact your agent. This is essential since it will help to protect you in the case of a lawsuit. It will also be necessary to cover costs related to the other party’s damage. You do not want your auto insurance company to find out through a court that you’ve had an accident. Instead, be honest and talk to your agent.

The fact is, you have car insurance to help in these situations. With the right policy, you do not have to worry about paying out-of-pocket for your losses. Let your auto insurer help you work to get the lowest-cost policy for your needs. It can help you to get back on the road in no time.
