Remember These Safety Tips for Fall Motorcycling

The fall may mean wonderful outdoor temperatures and beautiful foliage. It may tempt America’s motorcycle riders to set out on the road to see some of the sights.

But, the fall also signals a change in weather. During the fall, the chances of certain inclement weather usually increase. Riders often face safety threats due to fall weather when they hit the road. The chances that motorcyclists have to file a motorcycle insurance claim may increase. Motorcyclists should brush up on the risks they may face during fall operations.

1. Avoid Inclement Weather

During the fall, warm weather begins to move out and cooler weather may move in. Changing conditions may create storms, damp conditions and the potential for wet roads. Motorcycles are often harder to control compared to the average four-wheeled vehicle. Wet conditions may raise the risk that riders will lose control when riding.

Furthermore, changing foliage, like falling leaves, may contaminate roadways and make them slick. As this phenomena is closely associated with fall, riders should remain aware of it. Riders should know how to navigate these conditions and avoid areas where foliage may cause problems.

2. Receive Maintenance at Regular Intervals

Perform preventative maintenance on your bike seasonally. It can help you improve your bike’s operational risks during this period. Changing the oil, checking your tire pressure, and tightening any loose nuts and bolts may help prevent accidents that arise from neglected maintenance.

3. Consider Adjusting Your Motorcycle Insurance

Before heading out on an excursion, make sure your bike's insurance is active and current. You should have appropriate liability, collision and comprehensive coverage to protect you whenever you operate. If you don’t have appropriate coverage, you could increase risks to your bike, yourself and others.

However, after your fall use, you might see a dwindling of your bike usage. Many bikers don’t ride during the winter because of undesirable conditions. They may choose to store their bikes during this period.

When storing their bikes, motorcyclists may be able to adjust their coverage. Bikers may be able to reduce their collision and liability coverage for the period they plan to store the bike. However, bikers should maintain or even increase their comprehensive coverage. Comprehensive coverage can protect against fire, theft or other damage risks. These may be more common risks during storage.

A reduced policy may still protect against the damages common during storage. This may help bikers save money on their actual insurance coverage. Bikers should not consider cancelling their motorcycle insurance. Coverage gaps may signal risks to bike insurers.
