Most people don’t want to live a lower quality of life in retirement, but that could become the reality if you don’t plan properly. Here are two simple steps to initiate your planning.  First, make a list of things that you want to do once you retire, be sure to include day to day activities, special occasions, vacations, and expenses.  Second, calculate the cost of this new life style; first break the cost down annually and then monthly. By taking these two steps, you can see a realistic view of the income that you will need to meet your retirement goals.  Knowing how much you need for retirement is the first step in saving!

If your employer offers a plan, learn all the facts about it to maximize its benefits. Do you need to work for the company for a certain time before you can collect the money? What’s the policy for collecting the savings? Are there restrictions? Be sure to take the time to ask your Human Resource Department about these questions before setting a date to retire.  If you do not have a savings plan throug your employer, start an IRA immidiately!  Take the time to meet with a Financial Advisor to help you plan in either case!  Learn about what you’re entitled to, what options you have, so you can make smart choices for the future.
