Self-driving cars are hitting the road. Numerous states are allowing testing on autonomous vehicles like this.

Some expectations are that such vehicles will become commonplace in the coming years. And, some studies indicate children being born now will never need to learn to drive. How does this impact car insurance?

Determining Who Is Responsible

A key factor to consider is responsibility. Many drivers get auto insurance to reduce the financial costs when they are at-fault in an accident. In the case of a self-driving car, responsibility is not clear. Is the driver still responsible for what the vehicle does? Or, is the software manufacturer responsible?

Unfortunately, no clear answer exists just yet. Government agencies are working to better understand the legal ramifications of self-driving vehicles. Right now, we know drivers who own vehicles need to have auto insurance in place.

Self-driving cars are changing the liability insurance market. In some cases, suppliers may be to blame. This could shift some auto insurance requirements away from drivers. Yet, there will likely always be a need for car insurance. This is especially true of comprehensive coverage. This insurance protects the vehicle from risks. Collision insurance may be necessary as well. Protecting a valuable asset like this will still be important.

Technology Is Making Vehicles Safer

Technology today is helping to make driving safer. For example, vehicles with blind-spot monitoring are less likely to cause accidents. Vehicles with sensors can detect when conditions require a driver to pull over. Fully automated cars are not as accessible yet as these vehicles with enhanced tech. Any driver with a vehicle with these types of upgrades should let their car insurance agent know. They may see a reduction in costs as a result.

As a driver, maintain quality auto insurance. It helps to protect your vehicle from loss. It safeguards your family's finances. It also can give you peace of mind. As self-driving cars hit the road, watch for changes. It is likely that drivers will see some differences over time. What they are is not yet clear. However, safer vehicles are always a good thing. Most insurance agencies are happy to insure vehicles with added tech. They are just a safer option for the road's today and the drivers behind the wheel.
