Mental health care is usually as important as traditional, physical healthcare. Yet, many people do not know if their health insurance policy offers this type of care and, if so, what it provides.

There are laws that require some health insurance to cover mental health services. These even include care for substance abuse and behavioral illness. However, each policy differs from the next. That makes it up to you, the policyholder, to take a closer look at what your coverage is.

Understanding Your Rights

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, passed in 2008, requires that individuals have equal access to the mental health services. This gives you the ability to seek out mental health care providers and evaluations for care. Insurers must treat mental health with equal or better coverage as any medical coverage provided.

What should you do if you think you need care?

  • Talk to your family doctor about your needs. This professional may be able to recommend mental health services to meet your needs.
  • Contact your insurance provider to inquire about the mental health services available. They will provide you with information on how to use your plan fully.
  • Seek out care from a provider directly. Often, the provider will be able to verify the coverage you have when you arrive for care.

Seek out care for any needs you have. If you need a mental health evaluation for employment or social services, these providers can help you and your health insurance is likely to cover the costs. Perhaps you just need to talk because you are anxious, depressed, or overly worried about your mental health. You may recognize your need to seek out help for substance abuse. These are all services most health insurance plans can provide to you.

It is important to speak to your health care provider to fully understand where you can get this help. Your policy may have special requirements as to where to get help, when you can get it, and whether or not you need approval from your family doctor. There’s no reason not to use these services to get evaluated for overall well-being or for more advanced care.
