Every January we seem to make a resolution to work out more, read a book, or start a hobby. Why is it that we create a start-date months in advance and inhibit our own success? There’s nothing stopping you from picking up a book, buying a new pair of running shoes, or learning how to scrapbook today. Waiting until the New Year does nothing but postpone you becoming the best version of yourself.
Whether your goal is to lose weight, become more social, or better manage your money- we have a fool-proof way of obtaining your goals BEFORE 2015.
Decide exactly what it is you want to accomplish. When you envision the best version of you- what exactly do you see? Someone who’s in shape, friendly, or trustworthy? Maybe you see a great mother or father, or someone who makes the best home-cooked meals; what’s your resolution?
It’s important that you keep something to track your growth. Often times we get used to our daily routine and days quickly turn into weeks and months before we even realize it. Invest in a journal! Whether you’re tracking your budget or how you feel about your outdoor run that morning- it’s a great way to keep tabs on your development. It also encourages you to keep going; it’s tough to call it quits when you’re holding twenty pages of progress in the palm of your hands.
Talk about your goals out loud! It’s difficult to reach for an extra piece of bread at dinner when people know you’re trying to watch your weight. Likewise, it’s hard to justify spending money on new shoes when you’re walking around the store in perfectly fine ones. This doesn’t mean you can’t indulge every now and then, but it definitely helps to keep you in line when you ought to be.
All work and no play is no fun (and a recipe for disaster); learn how to balance things! Just because you want to save money doesn’t mean you have to ride a bike to work (although with today’s gas prices who would blame ya?) With a mindset like that, you’ll end up splurging on an inexpensive, unnecessary object when you’ve reached your wits’ end. And believe it or not, you can lose weight by eating more than just lettuce and celery sticks! Eat right throughout the week and don’t feel guilty when you have pizza and a beer on the weekend.
Celebrate your accomplishments and don’t be too hard on yourself when times get tough. If being successful, fit, and a great cook were easy, we’d all be driving to our triathlons in Camaros, and celebrating our first place victory with homemade lobster tail. Anything worth having is worth working for. If you have determination, willpower, and a positive attitude you can- and will- accomplish absolutely anything you set your mind to.
