Luxurious bathEvery New Year’s we set resolutions which are aimed to help better ourselves as we begin a new chapter in our lives.  However, many of us fall into these traps of setting unrealistic goals and therefore we end up not being able to stick with these resolutions.  By the end of February we have most likely already forgotten what we even set as our original goal.  Here are 8 practical resolutions that are realistic and painless to start and stick with throughout the New Year:  
  1. Drink one extra glass of water a day! I know this may sound silly, but just one extra glass of water per day can help curb cravings therefore assist in maintaining a healthy weight.  If it is this easy to help control a steady healthy weight why are we not all doing it?  In the United States water is the second most popular drink...behind soft drinks (Schwecherl). Lets try and get water to the top of that list.  So, put down the processed sugary drinks and grab a refreshing tall glass of H2O!
  2. Get to at least 10,000 steps a day! The general recommendation for number of steps per day is about 10,000, which amounts to approximately 5 miles.  The average sedentary person walks about 1,000 to 3,000 steps per day (thewalkingsite.com). Even adding 1,000 steps per day, these people can only benefit from this.  Fitbits or any type of pedometers are great ways to keep track of your steps and are also very motivating.  Take the dog for a walk, choose the stairs, park further from the grocery store and get those steps in!
  3. Smile more! Numerous studies have shown that smiling actually helps you living longer.  One study from University College London stated that happy cheerful people are 35% more likely to live longer.  Smiling lowers your heart rate and reduces blood pressure, while relaxing the body.  The muscles we use to smile lift the face, making a person appear younger, and who would not love a few years shed off?
  4. Start working out! Now I know we tell ourselves quite more than we would like to admit that we will start working out.  If you are one of the people that fall into this trap make this your number one goal for the year.  Remember not to push yourself too hard in the beginning.  Start off slow, 2-3 times a week and build yourself up from there. On average it takes about 3-4 weeks to make something a habit.  Let’s make working out a habit within the first month of this new year and carry on the lifestyle forever!
  5. Save some money! There are many ways to help you save even a few bucks a day doing the most ordinary activities.  We blindly spend money on a daily basis and you only have to follow a couple easy tricks to keep those extra pennies in your pocket.  Saving money can also help eliminate added stress by knowing you are comfortable financially if anything were to happen.  Having the extra cash when you want to splurge on an item or a vacation for yourself is a great feeling when you can do it without feeling guilty about it!
  6. Reduce, Reuse, And Recycle! It may sound like cliché to some now, but why isn’t everyone doing this yet?  It’s as easy as dumping your paper and plastic products into a separate bin next to your trash can.  We have all seen people throw perfectly good recyclables into a trash can RIGHT NEXT to a recycling bin.  Start using reusable water bottles, turn off the lights when you leave a room, recharge your batteries, and remember the three R’s!
  7. Procrastinate less! Surprisingly a big part of procrastination is not being organized.  Buy yourself a cheap planner or calendar and write down deadlines, goals, and important dates to help along the way.  Being able to visualize what you need to accomplish, is a great way to keep yourself on track. Setting alarms and reminders are two great ways to make sure you stay on top of the really important things! 
  8. TREAT YOURSELF!!! Trying our absolute best to improve our lives over the year can get very hectic and at times stressful. It is very easy to get caught in the consistent cycle of everyday responsibilities that we forget our own needs along the way. Self-care is very important in dealing with stress and living a healthy lifestyle.  It also allows you take a step back and reward yourself every once in a while. So, whether your treat may be a massage, a piece of chocolate, or a new pair of sneakers enjoy it because you deserve it!

A major part about keeping these resolutions, is remembering it is OK to slip up every now and again. We are human and nobody is perfect. With that being said, you have to get right back on board. Don’t wait until the next year to start the resolution over again, start back up IMMEDIATELY. I promise you, you’ll start to see major differences in your life which will motivate you to keep going. So, let’s go out there and make 2018 an amazing year and one we will never forget!
