Keeping your WHOLE family safe: Miller's storm tips for small animals

Gather your:

  • Insurance policies: including your claims reporting telephone number.
  • Important financial papers: store them in a safe and accessible place.
  • Birth certificates, Passports, Visas, SS cards: store in a safe place.
Reread your insurance policy as a reminder to your coverage,
your general/specific policy limits and your deductibles.
Keep in mind: when a major storm/earthquake/etc. occurs, coverages become restricted:
call your Account Manager at Miller’s Insurance Agency for further details.

 To-Do:

  • Create a Storm Kit: ideas- clothes, cash, batteries, flash lights, battery operated radio/television, bottled water, toilet paper, non-perishable foods such as cereal or crackers, canned goods, a can opener, candles, prescription medicines, over-the-counter medications, diapers, baby wipes, formula, baby food.
  • Plan things to do: when the power goes out have board games, a deck of cards, books, magazines, arts & crafts, crayons and downloadable coloring pages.
  • Withdraw cash: financial institutions, ATM’s, post offices, telephone lines, stores, etc. may be closed after a direct hit.
  • Pay any necessary bills: a major storm could interrupt phone service/mail carriers causing you to miss payments and incur late charges.
  • Secure your windows, if need-be: board up weak windows with 5/8” marine plywood, tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
  • Be sure your trees and shrubs are trimmed away from windows.

  During:

  • Go to the basement or interior hall: stay away from windows/objects that could fall.
  • Stay as close to the ground as possible: if you live in a high rise, find a safer location to wait out the storm.
  • Stay away from large bodies of water.
  • Unplug electrical appliances to avoid a surge: beware of lighting.
  • Use text messaging to communicate: they have a greater chance of getting through during high-usage periods. Make sure your phone is fully charged.

 Afterwards:

  • Do not touch fallen or low-hanging wires: stay away from puddles, trees and objects with wires near them.
  • Call police or utility companies immediately to report hazards: downed power lines, broken gas or water mains, overturned gas tanks, etc.
  • Report any claims to your insurer as soon as you are able.
  • Follow up on submitted payments: ensure they were received.
