Brace for the Storm - Hurricane Season

0 Comment(s) Posted

As predicted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Climate Predictions Center , this year’s hurricane season will be an active one.  Their findings have resulted in a prediction for the Atlantic regions: 70% chance of 12 – 18 named storms, 3-6 of these storms may become major hurricanes.

This being said, maybe now is a good time to make sure you are ready to batten-down the hatches! But how exactly do you prepare for a hurricane?

Gather emergency supplies including (not limited to):

Non perishable food

Flashlights and batteries

First aid needs

Bottled water

Battery operated radio

Prepare your home:

Clear the storm drains and gutters (help promote successful rain drainage)

Repair/Maintain/replace storm windows, doors, and shutters

Call your agent – and discuss your property insurance policy – and ensure your home is covered in case of loss.  Keep in mind damage most polices cover wind damage, but not all water damage is covered.  Flood can happen anywhere and is not covered by your home insurance!  See more on Flood Insurance.

When the storm hits:

Bring kids toys, lawn furniture, pool supplies, and tools inside or into a garage for cover.

Stock your emergency kit BEFORE the Storm occurs!

Review with your loved ones an evacuation plan as well as contact info.  Remember if there is no power, you cell phone may be inoperable.

During the storm:

Listen for reports using your radio or television about the storms progress.

Sit tight – do not head outside unless evacuation is necessary.

Avoid windows and doors incase they are shattered.

Avoid driving on flooded roads or washed out bridges.

Unplug appliances or even shut off your electricity, and main water valve in the event of a major hurricane.

After the storm:

Stay tuned to your radio or television for local information.

Avoid down power lines – and alert the Power Company, Fire Company or police of these live wires.

Return home when advised to do so by local authorities.

Beware critters who may have migrated to higher ground (including snakes, insects or other animals)

Storms and hurricanes are uncontrollable, and can be extremely destructive.  Prepare yourself, and ensure you’re covered in case of loss due to these powerful forces of nature.
